Ukraine has advanced by two positions this year to take twenty-fifth place in the 2021 Military Strength Ranking by Global Firepower, which rates countries by potential military capability.

This improved ranking is the latest indication of Ukraine’s growing military strength as the country continues to rebuild its armed forces in order to meet the challenge of ongoing Russian aggression.

When Russia first invaded Crimea and launched a hybrid takeover of eastern Ukraine in spring 2014, the Ukrainian military was in disarray following decades of post-Soviet neglect. However, over the past seven years, unprecedented investments have enabled the country to significantly modernize and upgrade its armed forces.

Global Firepower has compiled the Military Global Firepower Ranking annually since 2006. It features 138 countries, with scores given in a range of categories ranging from land, air, and sea forces to financials and logistical capability.
